vulnerable and marginalized members of our community. Opened
in 2004, My Sisters’ Place is a unique program in London
offering practical and emotional supports and community
services to women who are at risk with a variety of issues
such as:
mental health, isolation,
extreme poverty, homelessness, substance use, and violence/abuse.
WOTCH is a premier community
based mental health provider in Ontario. My Sisters’ Place is
an important part of WOTCH’s commitment to its clients and
their needs.
About
My Sisters’ Place and Its Participants
Located at the corner of King
and William Streets, attendance at the centre has increased
steadily from 10-15 women per day two years ago, to
50-70participants today.
My Sisters’ Place is
precedent setting for South Western Ontario and is modeled
after the highly successful program in Toronto known as "Sistering"
that has been in existence for 20 years and is primarily
funded through the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC).
My Sisters’ Place partners
with 14 other community agencies to obtain services that
are imperative to restore health and well being.
Clients at My Sisters’ Place are marginalized and seen as
"difficult to serve" within the health care system.
Homeless women have a mortality rate seven times higher
than women in the general population.
Significant funding for this program through the Federal
Homelessness Initiative is scheduled to end March 31, 2007.
