My Sisters’ Place at WOTCH Community Mental Health Services, cares for the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our community.

 

Opened in 2004, My Sisters’ Place is a unique program in London offering practical and emotional support and community services to women who are at risk with a variety of issues such as:

  • mental health

  • isolation

  • extreme poverty

  • homelessness

  • substance use

  • violence/abuse

Objective

My Sisters’ Place is a woman’s transitional support centre that supports women, who are homeless and/or marginalized, on their continuum to stability. Independence and an enhanced quality of life are achieved by meeting women’s needs and building a strong community together.

 

Model

My Sisters’ Place is precedent-setting for SW Ontario and is modeled after the highly successful program in Toronto known as “Sistering” that has been in existence for 20 years.

 

Participants

  • 50 to 70 women per day of whom 30% are of Native descent

  • Homeless women have a mortality rate seven times higher than women in the general population

Services

  • Safe, welcoming, home-like environment

  • Partnerships with 16 community agencies who deliver some services on-site

  • Nutritious food program with a hot daily meal

  • Support workers and counselling and on-street outreach to female sex workers

  • Peer Support Program

  • Meeting basic needs such as personal hygiene products, showers, laundry and clothing

  • Daily programs such as yoga, knitting, literacy, and computer access

  • Micro enterprise

  • Native outreach and awareness
